From design and production capabilities to the materials used, the sign and display industry has seen significant advancements in technology over recent years, developed to keep up with demand and key trends affecting this sector.

Three key trends shaping the sector can be seen in the growing shift towards ‘express’ shipped, customised printed goods and use of a broader, more sustainable range of materials for POS, signage and display applications.

Although these materials can present certain finishing and aesthetic challenges to the final product, (as anyone who’s worked with recycled aluminium in the past can attest), for many signage producers this is good news.

To stay relevant, brands and retail spaces must be attuned and able to quickly respond to sudden trends driven by online engagements, giving them a short window of opportunity to both appear connected to their audience and drive sales.

These trends, therefore, can both be a win for the environment and an opportunity for forward-looking signage producers who are able to quickly capitalise on them and cater to those customers. This is because not only are they more environmentally conscious and with high expectations of turnaround times, but they’re willing to pay for it as well.

This was the case for Bluejet, a Kongsberg PCS customer and producer of high quality signage, display and packaging solutions for over 20 years, based in Gdańsk, Poland. Shifts in demand towards wider format prints using more diversified materials and faster turnaround times led the company to invest in a number of printing and finishing solutions over the past decade. This includes two Kongsberg C64 tables with automated Feeder & Stackers and two Kongsberg C66 tables with robotics to deliver fully automated production.

Pawel Kaczorowski, Director of Bluejet, explains how the company has scaled its operations in line with its customer needs over the past decade, including an investment in fully automated finishing solutions, which have made the Bluejet team faster and more productive:

“We started just with a small plotter, but today we have huge machines,” said Pawel. “Bluejet is one of the biggest companies in Poland today. We have the biggest capacity and we can create many different products for our clients. We can work three shifts on it, five days, six days; sometimes when we have huge orders, even seven days per week - without any problem.”
